Kenneth Noland: Shaped Paintings 1981-82

October 29, 2009 – January 30, 2010

Leslie Feely Fine Art is proud to present an exhibition of shaped paintings by Kenneth Noland. Focusing on a group of works from 1981-82, the show consists of exceptional paintings from the artist’s personal collection.

Having first moved away from the traditional rectangular picture frame in the mid-sixties with his Diamond paintings (1963-67), Noland began in 1975 to explore the potential of irregularly shaped canvases, culminating in the works from 1981-82. He was influenced by his experience of making sculpture in the early 70s. They are less rigidly defined than the shaped canvases of Frank Stella and Ellsworth Kelly.

Noland’s masterful use of color takes on a new dimension in these paintings. They powerfully take over the space, transcending their boundaries. They are both luminescent and subtly textured.
