Leslie Feely Fine Art is proud to present a selection of recent works by Robert Kelly. Exhibitions of Kelly’s work in New York have been extremely rare; this is his first public showing in Manhattan in five years.
Over the past three decades, Robert Kelly has created unique and modern works of art inspired by close reexaminations of the past. Influenced by artists such as Arp, Brancusi, Calder, the Bauhaus group, and Tony Smith, Robert Kelly embraces the formalist tradition while incorporating found materials steeped in history.
Vintage papers and archival newsprint provide the base for Kelly’s newest body of work. Collected during the artist’s travels, these papers lend each painting a distinctive voice, suspended and partially obscured by rich overlays of paint and glaze. Kelly’s work is unique in the surfaces he makes, each meticulously polished to appear almost bone-like in luster. Saturated color and contrasting hues enhance the careful balance of Kelly’s iconic forms. Mysterious, sensual, and serene, these paintings are extraordinary for their strength and refinement.
