Dan Christensen: Paintings 1970-1989

September 17 – October 31, 2015

On view is an intimate presentation of paintings by American artist Dan Christensen from 1970 - 1989 from the artist's Plaid, Spray and Scrape series.  Yellow Bumper, 1970 from Christensen's Plaid series, illustrates the artists investigation of sharply defined color expanses and lucid structures. This geometric abstraction contrasts glossy fields with flat surfaces, creating a landscape of varied surface textures and depths across the canvas.

Also on view are Greenglo, 1988 and Seminole, 1989 from the artist's Spray series. Atop a pearlescent shimmering painting, Christensen sprays acrylic in a controlled gesture, resulting in fluid intersecting circles that dissipate into soft mists towards the extreme canvas edge. These "post-painterly" pictures are a hallmark of the artist's career. Lastly on view is, Liberty, 1987 from the artist Scrape series. Here, Christensen scrapes through many colored layers of pigments in various thicknesses, revealing a variety of contrasting horizontal colored bands.

Dan Christensen is included in the following museum collections: Whitney Museum of American Art, NY; Museum of Modern Art, NY; Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, NY; Metropolitan Museum of Art, NY; Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Washington, DC; Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, Kansas City; Museum fur Moderne Kunst, Frankfurt, Germany. Dan Christensen passed away in New York in 2007.
